Sometimes, military innovation is driven by technical progress. At other times, it is driven by war. Such was the case with the EMU (Electrochemically Modified Unattended) units. A free agents team, formed from genetically and machine-modified ratite’s from Earth.
A single EMU unit, after initial modifications increasing mental and combat potential, was released back into the wild. Before its termination by local forces, it had destroyed significant amounts of agricultural product after gaining control of its unmodified kin.
The EMU units deployed on the Death Fields Circuit are leased as mercenaries to other teams. They have had many more modifications over the centuries, including triple-barreled cannons for offense and communications fins installed directly to their heads, which allow for tactical and medical data to be preserved and studied for future iterations.
