Toxotai, or archers, were an integral part of the Byzantine military machine. Forming a significant portion of each chiliarciai – A formation including spearmen and archers that emulated and expanded upon ancient Hellenic tactics. Approximately 350 archers would form up behind 650 skutatoi.
