Originating from warriors of the Rus in the 9th century, the Varangian guard would become one of the most famous royal guard units in history. The guard would serve the Eastern Roman Emperors through to the mid 14th century. Ferocious in combat, the Varangians were known for their use of axes (linked to the northern European heritage of many of the initial recruits.) These figures are supplied with a choice of arms including the aforementioned axes and rhomphaia swords.
